Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival in Bali:
Welcome to Bali, the Island of the Gods. Your tour begins at Ngurah Rai International airport. You will be met by a representative and transferred to what will be our base for our Bali adventure (Please take note that we will advise which time we recommend you to land at Bali’s airport). You will meet the rest of the group and your tour leader whom you will be traveling with, as well as the team from Bali Reptile Rescue. We will have dinner together and talk about the adventure that awaits us. We’ll be staying at the Umadhatu Resort in the Tabanan area of Bali. This is located in the more rural areas of Bali.
In the evening we’ll head out on a night herping session around our accommodation. Species we might encounter will be white lipped pit vipers, vine snakes, slug snakes, Painted bronze-backs, mangrove cat snakes, yellow-lipped sea kraits, etc.
Day 2 - Birdwatching :
Early wake-up for breakfast and a morning session of bird watching. Afterward, we’ll enjoy a coffee stop at Pura Batukaru, then continue to Besikalung reserve at Mount Batukaru in Bali's central highlands to photograph the beautiful Bali starling. A songbird that is easily recognizable by its all-white plumage with black fringes along the tips of its tail and wings and a striking blue skin around its eyes. From being almost completely extinct a few years ago, the population has now started to grow thanks to intense conservation efforts. This is a fantastic place where we can experience a bird that is completely endemic to Bali. Other species we might encounter will be greater coucal, black-named oriole, Javan kingfisher, collared kingfisher, pearl-collared pigeon and changeable hawk-eagle.
Lunch will be enjoyed between the activities. This will be a full birdwatching day, so we’ll head back to our accommodation in the evening for dinner.
Day 3 - Tracking King Cobras & Goah Lawa:
After breakfast we’re getting picked up at our accommodation. This day is dedicated to searching for our main target and Bali’s most iconic snake, the majestic King Cobra. Coming face to face with the planet’s longest venomous snake is a mighty experience. We’ll be under the watchful eyes of professional cobra handlers that will ensure we have a safe, respectful and controlled experience, and this will allow us to focusing on getting quality photos when experiencing this icon specie of Bali. After a few hours out in the field, around midday we take a lunch break. If we want to we can have a stop at the team’s headquarter where we get served coffee and other refreshments.
In the afternoon we travel to Goah Lawa, a Hindu temple that’s built on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. Underneath the temple there’s a cave that’s closed off to everyday visitors, but we have permission to visit here. Every evening as the sun dips below the horizon the sky is filled with thousands of bats that take to the wings to search for food as they emerge out from the cave. Step into the darkness and feel the sounds from thousands of these nightly creatures around you as they become active. After the sun has set we return to our base for dinner and later head off for a session of night herping.
Day 4 - Tracking King Cobras:
After breakfast we have another full day in search of the king cobra with the Bali Reptile Rescue team. We have set aside two days to increase our chances of finding this iconic species. We will also be looking for pit vipers and spitting cobras, as well as the world's longest constrictor, the reticulated python. All of these reptiles call Bali's jungle home.
Later today we’ll be transported to our accommodation for the night, Harris Hotel Kuta Tuban. Lunch will be served out in the field since we’ll be out for most of the day. In the evening after dinner we have another session of night herping around Denpasar. After this we’ll return to our hotel for a night’s rest since we need to catch our flight from Bali to Flores.
Day 5 - Bali til Labuan Bajo & Rinca:
We are transferred to the Bali airport early in the morning and take a domestic flight to Labuan Bajo on the larger island of Flores (Flight times will be announced closer to the tour dates). The flight itself is an experience of its own as we fly over some of Indonesia's smaller islands. We are met by our local guide at the airport and transported to the harbor of Labuan Bajo. Here we board our private boat and meet the captain and crew. We are then shown around and accommodated in what will be our home for the next few days as we set sail for Komodo National Park.
Lunch is served on board, and if we have time we will snorkel on the coral reef. Be on the lookout for white-bellied sea eagles and kites diving for fish, or various species of kingfishers that live in the mangrove forests around the small islands. Before sunset we anchor at Kalong Island. With every sunset the sky is filled with thousands of flying foxes, also known as fruit bats, that live in the mangrove forests. As day turns to night they need to head out to find food, and this is a true natural wonder to experience. After this we go ashore on Rinca Island for a herping session to look for snakes in the night. White-lipped pit vipers, Eastern Russell's vipers and Timor pythons are some of the exciting species we can discover with a local herping guide.
Dinner is served when we are back on board. Overnight on our boat.
Day 6 - Rinca & Padar:
Breakfast is served at approximately 06:00AM as the boat sets sail towards the dragons' lair. Rinca Island is one of the largest islands in Komodo National Park, and here we will have our first encounter with the legendary Komodo dragons, the world's largest lizard. We will be guided around by a local guide from the national park so we can get close to the Komodo dragons to photograph them. We also have the opportunity to hike to a lookout point on Rinca as we move inland on the island to look for more dragons.
After exploring Rinca, we board our boat again and have lunch. We sail around the different islands and focus on bird photography, or we find a place to snorkel if we prefer that instead. In the afternoon we set sail towards Padar Island where we climb the peak before sunset. The hike takes a minimum of about 20 minutes, and once at the top you’ll see the spectacular panoramic view with the three iconic bays surrounded by the sea. We’ll watch the sun go down below the horizon as the whole island is painted in golden light. After we make our way down to get back on our boat we prepare ourself for a session of night herping. In the evening we meet a local herping guide from Padar to find the famous and exceptionally beautiful blue color variety of the white-lipped pit viper. These vipers are endemic to the lesser Sunda islands of Indonesia, and are famous for coming in three different color morphs. Padar has all three color varieties, so the chance of finding both yellow and green is also there. With their striking colors they really stands out in the night, giving us great photographic opportunities.
Dinner is served when we return on board. Overnight on our boat.
Day 7 - Manta Point & Komodo:
Breakfast is served at approximately 06:00AM as the boat sets sail for Manta Point. This is a famous diving spot where schools of huge manta rays often gather. Komodo National Park is located in the Coral Triangle, which has the world's richest biodiversity of marine species. The area is known for its colorful coral reefs, huge fish populations and other iconic species such as whale sharks. In addition to diving and snorkeling, we have the opportunity to relax on deck or go through photos and photo editing. Lunch is served on board.
In the afternoon, we sail on to Komodo island itself. We go ashore in Komodo village where we meet a local guide from the park. Here we begin to explore and continue looking for more Komodo dragons. We might not need to go far because the lizards are often seen around the local village and settlement. We focus on photographing these huge reptiles, and here we can get unique photos of the lizards with grasslands and the ocean as a back-drop. It is the less busy side of the island, so here we can explore and having the chances of encounters with the dragons all to ourselves.
We have dinner when we are back on the boat before setting our feets on Komodo in the evening. We have a new session of night herping as we look for more snakes and other nocturnal creatures with a local herping guide. The chance of encountering Komodo dragons in the dark is high, which can result in some exciting moments. Overnight on our boat.
Day 8 - Komodo:
Breakfast is served at approx. 06:00am as we sail towards the harbor and anchor up at Komodo island. We disembark at the beach and have the opportunity to spot Komodo dragons walking along the water's edge. The chance of spotting them at the beach is greatest in the morning. We trek through the forest area up to a lookout point where we get a great panoramic view of the island. Our target is again Komodo dragons, but we might encounter both rusa deer and wild boar, both of which are prey for the dragons. Also be on the lookout for golden-crested cockatoos that flock in the treetops here.
After a few hours of exploring we board our boat and have lunch together. We then decide which activity we want to prioritize. We can choose between snorkeling, bird photography, exploring the pink beaches, relax on deck or sail on. We also have the opportunity to edit photos together for those who wish to do so.
Dinner is served when we are back on board. Overnight on our boat.
Day 9 - Labuan Bajo to Bali:
Breakfast is served at 06:00am. We have the opportunity to choose what we want to spend the last hours on board the boat before we sail back to Labuan Bajo. We have lunch together in Labuan Bajo before we’re being transported to the airport for our flight back to Bali in the afternoon. (Please note that the flight from Flores back to Bali is not included in the itinerary) This will be the end of our amazing adventure as we now hade back to Bali and onward home.
