World famous Krüger national park is an iconic safari destination, but South Africa holds many game reserves that go under the radar. Explore the Eastern Cape’s less visited private reserves in the other biomes of this country for a different type of safari, or the remote Makuleke, hidden between Krüger and Zimbabwe in South Africa’s remote Northeastern corner.

The lesser known game reserves:

A green bird with a prominent crest, red eye ring, and orange beak perched on a tree branch among green leaves, with a clear blue sky in the background.

South Africa offers some of the finest birdwatching opportunities in all of Southern Africa. The region houses almost 1.000 different species, many being found in South Africa alone. Each year a huge numbers of migrant species travels as far away as from Europe and Central Africa filling the sky with new sounds. While the arrival of seasonal species happens fast and sudden, the departure happens more quiet and slowly once summer comes to an end.

Exceptional birdwatching:

A tall crane with wings spread wide standing in a field of yellowish-brown grass.
